George Armfield (1808–1893)

Early Life and Background:

  • Armfield was born in Bristol, despite some confusion over his birthplace being in Wales.
  • His father, William Armfield Hobday (1771–1831), was a prominent portrait painter.  It was through him that George likely received his early artistic training.
  • Armfield used the name “George Armfield Smith” until 1840, and then simply as George Armfield.

Armfield’s works, particularly his small dog paintings, were so well-regarded that they were sometimes mistaken for those of Edwin Landseer. He was a famed British painter of animals. Armfield’s detailed depictions of terriers, along with his mastery in rendering fur, motion, and landscape elements.  These made him a key figure in the genre of animal and hunting paintings.

Despite his connection with Wales, he was actually born in Bristol.   He inherited his artistic flair from his father, William Armfield Hobday, a portrait painter. His ability to capture animals’ emotions & actions was exceptional, especially ones like this oval painting. A testament to his legacy in British art.

George Armfield Notable Works:

His paintings include many titled along the lines of “Terriers Chasing Rabbit,” “Spaniels Flushing Birds,” and in addition, other depictions of animals in natural settings. One notable feature of his work is the small, oval-shaped compositions often framed in oak, which further heightened the focus on the dogs and their activity.
