Top Mistakes in Gundog Puppy Training & How to Avoid Them

Training gundogs has changed a lot in the last decade. Our expectations for working dogs have increased significantly compared to the past. Standards are high but our dogs are also part of our day-to-day life.

In this blog, we discuss common mistakes when training gundog puppies and how you can sidestep these pitfalls for a well-trained companion in the field and at home.

Starting Gundog Puppy Training Too Late…

People usually say you should start training your gundog puppy at about 8 months old, but that’s not quite right. Truth is, training starts the very first day. Puppies are like sponges, soaking up everything. So, every time you’re with your gundog pup, you’re setting the stage for how they’ll act in the future.

Whether you’re training a gundog for hunting, field trials, or simply as a loving pet, the importance of working with a professional Gundog trainer from the early stages cannot be overstated. Gundog trainers specialise in tailoring training programs to your puppy’s specific role. The right training at the appropriate time can have enormous benefits in the long run.

Socialisation and Stimulation

Gundog puppies from a reputable breeder should come with some early stages of socialisation, however, their intelligent and eager natures require targeted stimulation. Keep in mind, gundog puppies, as with all pets, quickly develop habits (both good and bad!)

Remember, they can only learn what you teach them from the moment you bring them home.

Managing ‘Naughty’ Gundog Puppy Behaviours!

It’s easy to find yourself with an energetic 8-month-old that has picked up less desirable habits…

Pulling on the lead, jumping up on people, chasing birds, and the dreaded ‘catch me if you can’ routine. At this stage, it’s not unusual to feel overwhelmed.

So, instead of wading through contradictory advice on YouTube or social media, reach out to Kugae Gundogs for a free assessment. We’re here to help correct the course and guide you and your gundog puppy back on track.

A large percentage of our customers come in at panic stage.  While all the issues can be resolved, surely it is better to avoid them in the first place?
