There is nothing more satisfying than watching a team of dogs turn on a whistle and come straight back across open ground. In this video, Carl recalls the dogs from distance across a large field before sending them into the water together at the end. It looks simple. However, good recall takes time, consistency, and trust between dog and handler.

Why Recall Matters So Much

Recall is one of the most important parts of any gundog’s training. Without it, you lose control, safety, and teamwork. Whether you are training a family pet or a working shooting dog, reliable recall should always be a priority.

A dog with strong recall can:

·         Be trusted off lead

·         Work safely around livestock and roads

·         Stay steady around distractions

·         Build confidence in the handler

·         Progress further in training

Most importantly, recall creates control without pressure.

Recall Starts Young

At Kugae Gundogs, we always encourage owners to begin recall training early. Keep sessions fun and rewarding. Puppies naturally want to follow and work with you if you build that relationship correctly from the beginning.

Simple games using:

·         Tennis balls

·         Puppy dummies

·         Food rewards

·         Positive praise

can all help develop a reliable recall.

However, timing is everything. Call the dog once, reward heavily when they return, and avoid repeating commands over and over.

Why Dogs Ignore Recall

Many recall problems come from inconsistency. Owners often:

·         Recall the dog too late

·         Repeat commands constantly

·         Chase the dog

·         Only call the dog when the fun ends

Dogs quickly learn patterns. Therefore, recall must sometimes lead to more freedom, retrieves, or fun.

A recall should never always mean “training is over.”

Long Leads Can Help

We regularly use our Kugae 9m PVC Long Training Leads during recall and steadiness work as they allow freedom while maintaining control at distance.

At Kugae Gundogs, we regularly use long lines during:

·         Early whistle recall work

·         Water introductions

·         Distance control

·         Steadiness training

This helps keep the dog within what Carl often calls the “magic circle” of control.

Adding Water into Training

The end of this video shows the dogs driving confidently into the water together. Water work is excellent for building enthusiasm, fitness, and focus.

However, water should never become uncontrolled excitement.

A dog still needs to:

·         Stop on command

·         Recall correctly

·         Stay calm around other dogs

·         Enter and leave the water under control

That balance between drive and control is what creates a dependable working dog.

Final Thoughts

Good recall is not about shouting louder. It is about building a partnership where the dog genuinely wants to return to you.

The dogs in this video cover a large area confidently because they understand exactly what is expected. That comes from repetition, fairness, and consistent handling.

Whether you own a Labrador, Spaniel, Retriever, or young puppy, solid recall foundations will improve every area of your training journey.
