Kennel Dogs vs House Dogs – Which Is Right for Your Dog?
One of the questions we're asked more than almost any other is:
"Should my dog live in the house or in kennels?"
The honest answer is that there isn't one correct solution.
Every dog is different. Every owner is different. What works perfectly for one family may be completely wrong for another.
In our latest YouTube video, Carl discusses the advantages and disadvantages of both kennel dogs and house dogs, explaining why the decision should always be based on the individual dog, the owner's lifestyle, and the dog's purpose.
The Benefits of House Dogs
For many owners, having a dog in the house is exactly what they imagined when they bought a puppy.
Dogs become part of everyday family life, spending time with their owners, relaxing in the evenings and joining in daily routines.
Living indoors can help owners notice changes in their dog's health or behaviour more quickly, and many dogs thrive on being close to their families.
However, living in the house also requires clear boundaries. Without consistent training, dogs can develop unwanted habits such as demanding attention, becoming over-dependent on their owners or struggling when left alone.
The Benefits of Kennel Dogs
Kennels often have an unfair reputation.
Many people picture cold, dark buildings where dogs are simply shut away. In reality, a well-designed kennel should be clean, secure, comfortable and built entirely around the dog's welfare.
At Kugae Gundogs, our kennel dogs are provided with comfortable bedding, fresh water, excellent ventilation and temperature control. They are exercised regularly, trained daily and spend plenty of time with us throughout the day.
A kennel is simply where a dog sleeps and relaxes between activities—it doesn't replace exercise, training or human interaction.
For many working and active dogs, kennels provide a calm environment where they can properly switch off and rest.
There Is No Perfect Answer
One of the biggest misconceptions is that dogs are either "house dogs" or "kennel dogs."
In reality, many dogs enjoy both.
Some of our own dogs spend time in the house, while others are more settled in kennels. We always consider each dog's personality, age, training and individual needs.
The important thing isn't where your dog sleeps.
It's whether they are healthy, well exercised, mentally stimulated and enjoy spending quality time with their owners.
Welfare Always Comes First
Regardless of where your dog lives, responsible ownership means providing:
Daily exercise
Mental stimulation
Consistent training
Clean, comfortable sleeping areas
Fresh water
Good nutrition
Regular human interaction
A dog living in a beautiful house can still become bored if these needs aren't met.
Likewise, a dog living in a well-managed kennel can lead an incredibly happy and fulfilled life.
Our Thoughts
At Kugae Gundogs, we don't believe there's a universal right or wrong answer.
Instead, we encourage owners to think carefully about what suits both themselves and their dog.
Whether your dog sleeps in the house, in a kennel, or enjoys both, what matters most is the standard of care, training and attention they receive every single day.
A happy dog isn't defined by where it sleeps—it's defined by the life it lives.
