Preparing a Labrador for Puppies | Flo's Journey to Motherhood
At Kugae Gundogs, we are often asked what happens during the final stages of a Labrador's pregnancy. In our latest YouTube video, Carl sits down with Flo, our black Labrador, as she enters the last week before her puppies are due.
Every litter is special. However, the days leading up to whelping are particularly important. During this time, we focus on keeping Flo comfortable, healthy, and well prepared for the arrival of her puppies.
How We Care for a Pregnant Labrador
As a Labrador approaches the end of her pregnancy, her nutritional needs change. Therefore, we make adjustments to ensure she receives the right balance of food and protein to support both herself and her growing puppies.
Careful management during this stage is essential. Not only does it help maintain the bitch's condition, but it also gives the puppies the best possible start in life.
Alongside feeding, we monitor Flo closely and make sure she has plenty of opportunities to rest.
Moving Flo Into the House
One of the biggest changes we make is bringing Flo into the house during the final stages of pregnancy.
Although Flo is perfectly happy in her kennel, we prefer to have her closer to us as her due date approaches. This allows us to keep a close eye on her and ensures she remains comfortable and settled.
Having the bitch nearby also helps us spot any early signs that labour may be approaching.
Looking Ahead to the Puppies
Every litter is different. However, it is always exciting to think about what the future may hold for the puppies.
As breeders and trainers, we look forward to watching each puppy develop its own personality. Some may go on to become working gundogs, while others may become much-loved family companions.
The early weeks play a huge role in shaping a puppy's confidence and development. Therefore, we place great importance on giving every puppy the very best start.
