Spaniel Delivery Problems? Here's How to Build a Reliable Delivery

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"My spaniel finds the retrieve perfectly, but the delivery back to me isn't reliable. How do I fix it?"

The truth is, a poor delivery can undo an otherwise excellent retrieve. Whether your dog drops the dummy early, spits it out at your feet, runs around you, or simply doesn't want to give it up, these are all common problems that can be improved with the right training.

In our latest YouTube video, Carl works with several different spaniels, each showing their own delivery challenges. Rather than hiding mistakes, we deliberately show them, explain why they happen, and demonstrate practical ways to improve them.

Every Dog Is Different

One of the biggest mistakes owners make is believing there is a single solution for every dog.

Some spaniels become over-excited.

Others lack confidence.

Some anticipate the retrieve instead of thinking through the task.

Others have simply developed habits that have never been corrected.

By working with several dogs, the video shows how understanding the individual dog is often more important than simply repeating the same exercise over and over.

Why Delivery Matters

Many owners concentrate on getting the dog to find the dummy.

However, a retrieve is not complete until the dummy is delivered calmly into your hand.

A reliable delivery means:

Better control during training.
Cleaner retrieves on shoot days.
Less frustration for both handler and dog.
A stronger partnership built on trust and consistency.

Good delivery is not about force. It is about teaching the dog exactly what is expected and making the correct behaviour easy to understand.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Throughout the video Carl explains how small adjustments in timing, handling and body language can completely change the outcome of a retrieve.

Sometimes the solution isn't asking more from the dog.

Sometimes it's asking more clearly.

These are the details that experienced trainers look for and they often make the biggest difference.

Training Equipment That Supports Good Retrieves

Having the right training equipment also helps build good habits.

At Kugae Gundogs, every product we sell is something we genuinely use ourselves during training. From training dummies to long leads, our equipment has been developed through years of working with Labradors and Spaniels in real training situations.

The goal is always the same: make learning as clear and enjoyable as possible for both dog and handler.
