What Does a Part-Trained Gundog Actually Look Like? Dougie’s Progress
When people hear the words “part-trained gundog”, it can be difficult to know exactly what that should mean.
Should the dog already be completely steady? Should it retrieve perfectly every time? Should it be ready to go straight into the shooting field?
At Kugae Gundogs, we think it is important to be realistic about what you should expect from a young, part-trained dog. They are not finished gundogs. Instead, they should have good foundations in place that can continue to be developed as they mature and gain experience.
In this week’s YouTube video, Carl takes Dougie, one of our young Springer Spaniels, out into the field to show exactly where he is with his training.
Building the Right Foundations
With a young working dog, we aren't looking for perfection.
At this stage, we want to see that the foundations are developing correctly while still allowing the dog to enjoy its work and use its natural ability.
For a Springer Spaniel like Dougie, that means encouraging his desire to hunt while teaching him that the best place to find that excitement is in and around his handler.
This becomes particularly important when we introduce more realistic environments.
Training in an open field with few distractions is very different from working where there is scent, cover and live game. This is where you begin to see how well those early foundations are transferring into real situations.
Staying Close Around Game
One of the areas Carl demonstrates with Dougie is his ability to stay close and connected to the handler when there is game around.
For a young spaniel, game is incredibly exciting — and we want it to be.
We don't want to take away the natural hunting instinct that makes a working Springer Spaniel what it is. Instead, the aim is to gradually develop control alongside that drive.
Dougie needs to learn that he can hunt, explore cover and enjoy the excitement of game without disappearing off and working for himself.
This is something that develops over time.
A Part-Trained Dog Isn't a Finished Dog
This is perhaps one of the most important things to understand when considering a part-trained gundog.
Part-trained does not mean finished.
A young dog may have established heelwork, recall, retrieving, hunting and other important foundations, but there will still be plenty to develop.
Age, maturity and experience all play a part.
At Kugae Gundogs, we would rather show people honestly where a dog is in its training than create the impression that every exercise is perfect.
There will be good days, mistakes and moments when you need to change your approach. That's all part of developing a young dog.
What Comes Next for Dougie?
As Dougie progresses, Carl can gradually ask more of him.
The foundations he has now give us something to build upon, but the next stages aren't about rushing him.
We'll continue developing his control, hunting, steadiness and ability to work around increasingly exciting distractions while keeping that all-important connection with the handler.
The aim is to produce a dog that doesn't just perform an exercise because it has been taught to do so, but understands how to work with its handler.
And we'll continue showing Dougie's progress as his training develops.

Gundog Training at Kugae Gundogs
We work with both pet and working gundogs at our training ground in the Lincolnshire Wolds, with training designed around the individual dog and handler.
From puppies taking their first steps in training through to more advanced gundog work, our aim is to build confident dogs with strong foundations while helping owners understand why we train the way we do.
We also offer residential training and occasionally have young dogs available at different stages of their training.
