What Gundog Training Equipment Do You Really Need?
Choosing the right gundog training equipment can be confusing. There are countless products available, and many new owners are unsure where to start.
In our latest video, Carl takes you through the products we use every day here at Kugae Gundogs. From puppy training through to advanced gundog work, he explains what each item is designed for and how it can help your dog's development.
The most important thing to remember is that training equipment should support your training. It should never replace good foundations, consistency, and patience.

Starting With Puppies
When working with young puppies, we like to keep things simple.
The early stages of training should focus on building confidence, creating enthusiasm, and developing a strong bond between dog and owner.
Lightweight puppy dummies are ideal at this stage. They are easy for small mouths to carry and help encourage natural retrieving instincts.
We also use slip leads and lightweight training leads to introduce basic lead work and control without putting pressure on the puppy.
Most importantly, training should remain fun and enjoyable.
Why Dummy Colours Matter
Many owners are surprised to learn that dummy colour can influence training.
Bright colours such as orange and blue are highly visible. Therefore, they are often useful when introducing retrieves and building confidence.
As training progresses, colours such as plum can become valuable.
A less visible dummy encourages the dog to rely more on its nose rather than simply using its eyes. As a result, scenting ability and hunting skills continue to develop naturally.
In the video, Carl explains how we use different colours for different stages of training.
Long Leads and Control
Long leads are one of the most useful pieces of equipment we use.
They allow dogs to have freedom while still giving handlers control when needed.
This is especially important with Spaniels and other hunting breeds that naturally want to range further away.
Long leads are regularly used during recall training, heel work, and early hunting exercises.
When used correctly, they help prevent unwanted habits from becoming established.
Training Equipment for More Advanced Dogs
As dogs progress, training becomes more specialised.
At this stage, different dummy weights, shapes, and styles can help improve specific skills.
For example, larger dummies can build confidence carrying heavier game. Different shapes can also improve pickup technique and delivery.
However, advanced equipment should only be introduced when the dog's foundations are already in place.
Rushing ahead often creates problems later.
The Most Important Training Tool
Although we stock a wide range of products, the most important training tool remains the handler.
Good timing, consistency, patience, and clear communication will always have a greater impact than any piece of equipment.
The products we use simply help us reinforce training and develop specific skills more effectively.
That is why every product we sell is something we use ourselves during training sessions here at Kugae Gundogs.
