Which Gundog Slip Lead Should I Choose? A Guide to the Kugae Gundogs Lead Range

Which Gundog Slip Lead Should I Choose? A Guide to the Kugae Gundogs Lead Range

Which Gundog Slip Lead Should I Choose?

A slip lead is probably one of the simplest pieces of equipment you'll ever buy for your gundog, but choosing the right one can make a real difference to both training and everyday handling.

At Kugae Gundogs, we use slip leads every day with our own dogs and the dogs that come to us for training.

Over the years, we've found that there isn't necessarily one perfect lead for every dog or every situation. A lightweight lead that works beautifully with a young spaniel may not be what we'd choose for a strong Labrador, while there are occasions when we want something smarter or a completely different style of lead.

That's why our range includes several different options.

So, what's the difference — and which one should you choose?

Kugae 6mm Slip Lead

Our 6mm Slip Lead is a lightweight, straightforward gundog lead and a great all-round choice for training and everyday use.

It's particularly well suited to spaniels, younger dogs and handlers who prefer a lighter lead in their hand.

We use slip leads because they're quick and uncomplicated. There's no separate collar and no clips or buckles to worry about. You can put the lead on, take it off and get on with your training.

The 6mm lead is ideal for:

Spaniels and smaller gundog breeds
Young dogs
Heelwork
General obedience training
Everyday walks
Gundog training in the field

For many handlers, this is all the lead they'll ever need.

Kugae 8mm Slip Lead

For Labradors, Golden Retrievers and larger or stronger dogs, we generally prefer something with a little more substance.

That's where our 8mm Slip Lead comes in.

The thicker braided cord gives you a little more to hold onto and provides comfortable, confident handling with a bigger dog.

It's still simple and practical, but the heavier construction makes it particularly useful when you're working with a stronger dog.

The 8mm lead is a good choice for:

Labradors
Golden Retrievers
Larger gundog breeds
Stronger dogs
Heelwork and obedience
Everyday and field training

If you're deciding between the 6mm and 8mm versions, we'd generally look at the size and strength of your dog as well as what feels comfortable in your hand.

Kugae Rolled British Leather Slip Lead

Sometimes you want the practicality of a traditional slip lead but with something a little different.

Our Rolled British Leather Slip Lead combines the simple slip design we use for training with the look and feel of quality British leather.

It's available in both 6mm and 8mm, so you can choose the weight that best suits your dog.

It's a lovely option for everyday use, training, shoot days or for anyone who simply prefers traditional leather equipment.

The leather slip lead is particularly suited to:

Gundog training
Everyday walking
Shoot days
Working dogs
Handlers who prefer traditional leather equipment

It's practical enough to work with but smart enough to look the part on a shoot day.

6mm Spaniel Slip Collar

There are also times when you don't need a full-length lead.

Our 6mm Spaniel Slip Collar is designed as a lightweight handling collar for spaniels and smaller working dogs.

It's useful when you want something simple and compact for handling a dog without carrying a full lead.

For working spaniels in particular, keeping equipment simple can be a real advantage.

8mm Retriever Slip Collar

For Labradors, retrievers and larger dogs, we also have an 8mm Retriever Training Slip Collar.

It works on the same principle as the smaller spaniel version but gives you the additional substance you'd generally want when handling a larger dog.

Again, it's designed to keep things uncomplicated.

Double Training Lead for Two Retrievers

If you regularly handle two dogs together, our Double Training Lead for Two Retrievers offers another option.

Anyone who has tried walking two Labradors while juggling two separate leads will know how quickly things can become tangled.

A double lead gives you a more practical way of handling two dogs together and can be particularly useful for trained dogs that are accustomed to walking calmly side by side.

As with any double lead, we'd want both dogs to have a reasonable standard of heelwork rather than relying on the lead to control two dogs that are pulling in different directions.

Rolled British Leather Heel Lead

Our Rolled British Leather Heel Lead is another option for handlers looking for something smart, traditional and practical.

A heel lead is deliberately shorter and is ideal when your dog is expected to remain close beside you rather than having the additional length of a standard walking lead.

It's particularly useful for trained dogs, working situations and shoot days where you want to be able to keep your dog close and release them efficiently when required.

Kugae 9m PVC Long Training Lead

Our 9m PVC Long Training Lead is designed for a completely different stage of training.

We use a long lead when a dog needs more freedom to move and explore, but we're not yet confident enough to give them complete freedom off the lead.

This can be particularly useful when working on:

Recall training

Dogs that have started to become "self-employed"
Young dogs progressing towards off-lead work
Introducing more freedom while maintaining control
Training around new environments and distractions
Reinforcing boundaries before allowing a dog to work freely

A long lead can be a really useful stepping stone between having your dog on a normal lead and allowing them complete freedom.

The important thing is that the long lead isn't there simply to drag the dog back every time they don't listen. It's there to give the handler a way of maintaining control while teaching the dog that commands still apply when they're further away.

Our long training leads are made from PVC, which makes them particularly practical for gundog training. When you're working across wet grass, muddy fields and other countryside environments, they're easy to wipe clean and don't absorb water in the same way as some traditional materials.

At 9 metres long, the lead gives the dog enough room to move away from the handler and begin making choices, while still giving you that extra level of security.

For dogs struggling with recall or handlers who aren't yet confident about going completely off lead, a long training lead can be one of the most useful pieces of equipment in your training kit.

The aim, of course, is not to need it forever.

It's a training tool designed to help you build the control and reliability you need before progressing to confident off-lead work.

Why Do We Use Slip Leads for Gundog Training?

One of the biggest advantages of a slip lead is its simplicity.

A well-made slip lead allows you to communicate clearly with the dog while keeping equipment to a minimum.

For gundog training, that's important.

We don't want to spend our time fighting with complicated equipment. We want the dog learning to pay attention to the handler.

Used correctly, a slip lead should loosen when the dog is in the correct position. It's not about keeping constant pressure on the dog's neck.

Timing and handling are far more important than simply pulling harder on a lead.

6mm or 8mm – Which Should I Buy?

As a simple starting point:

Spaniel, smaller dog or young dog?
We'd generally look at the 6mm range.

Labrador, retriever or larger, stronger dog?
The 8mm range will generally give you a little more substance and control.

Want something traditional and smart?
Have a look at the Rolled British Leather Slip Lead.

Handling two trained retrievers?
The Double Training Lead may make life considerably easier.

Need something short for close handling?
Our Slip Collars or Leather Heel Lead could be the better option.

There's no rule saying you can only own one, either. Many of us have different leads for different jobs.

Equipment Should Be Simple

One thing you'll notice if you watch us training at Kugae Gundogs is that we don't believe you need huge amounts of complicated equipment to train a dog.

Good gundog training comes down to your relationship with the dog, timing, consistency and making yourself clear.

A lead is simply one of the tools that helps you achieve that.

That's also why the products we sell are products we'd be happy to use ourselves.

Whether you're starting with a young spaniel, training a Labrador for its first shooting season or simply looking for a practical lead for everyday countryside walks, choose the lead that suits your dog, your handling and what you're trying to achieve.
