Kugae 9m PVC Long Dog Training Lead – Gundog Training Long Lead

Developed from decades of practical experience training and working gundogs, the Kugae 9m PVC Long Dog Training Lead is one of the most versatile training aids we use here at Kugae Gundogs.

There is no unwanted stretch, it is responsive in the hand, moves smoothly through grass and cover, and can simply be wiped clean after wet or muddy training sessions.

Most importantly, the 9 metre length has been chosen for a reason. It gives us a practical training tool that can be used for heelwork and general control, quartering, recall and helping to correct difficult retrieve deliveries.

Why We Use a 9m Long Lead

A long lead shouldn't mean having your dog constantly 9 metres away pulling at the end of it.

When we're using the lead for heelwork, we want the dog working close to us and within what Carl calls the "magic circle" around the handler.

The length and weight of the lead allow it to trail naturally while still giving the handler the ability to calmly regain control if the dog starts to push the boundaries.

The 9 metre length then comes into its own when we move onto other areas of training.

Ideal for Teaching Quartering

One of the reasons we chose 9 metres is for working with spaniels and developing their quartering pattern.

The dog can be allowed to hunt approximately 9 metres to the left and 9 metres to the right, helping the handler establish a controlled left-to-right hunting pattern while retaining a connection to the dog.

This can be particularly useful with young dogs or dogs that are beginning to push too far away from the handler.

Helping With Retrieve & Delivery Problems

The Kugae Long Lead is also extremely useful for dogs that will make a retrieve but become reluctant to return or deliver cleanly to the handler.

We might place or throw a dummy approximately 6 metres away, allow the dog to make the retrieve and then use the long lead to calmly guide the dog back towards the handler.

Used correctly, it allows us to work on the delivery without chasing the dog or turning the retrieve into a battle.

Smooth 6mm PVC for Field Training

The material was particularly important when we developed the lead.

Our 6mm round PVC is smooth and weather-resistant, allowing the line to move easily through grass and across the ground without absorbing water and mud like a traditional fabric long line.

There is no unwanted stretch, giving the handler a responsive connection to the dog when it is needed.

After training, the PVC surface is also extremely easy to maintain – simply wipe it clean ready for the next session.

Strong, Secure Hardware

The lead is fitted with a heavy-duty 70mm dog clip and stainless steel pins for strength and durability.

The clip can be connected to our 6mm and 8mm Kugae slip leads or used with the Kugae Training Slip Collar, allowing you to create the training setup that works best for you and your dog.

A Training Aid – Not a Permanent Fixture

This is an important part of how we use long leads at Kugae.

A long lead is a training aid.

Its purpose is to help us work through a particular problem or establish a particular behaviour. We don't want the dog to become permanently reliant upon it.

Once the lead has done its job and the dog understands what is expected, we can gradually remove it.

Then it gets hung up until it's needed again – perhaps weeks or months later when a little refresher is required.

That's exactly how good training equipment should work.
